Dedicated to the disciples of nature, to the keepers of heirlooms both physical and otherwise. Each delicate pair in this collection was designed, not just for its splendor, but for its ability to make us ponder on what we consider “heirlooms.” The word conjures images of antique furniture, well-loved jewelry, an old book, a pocket knife, perhaps a set of silver. Even a name, the sound of a laugh, the placement of a freckle, a faith–all things our beloved ones leave in our hands on their way to becoming ancestors. But when we step, even for a moment, back into the truth that all on Earth are Nature itself, celestial elements made terrestrial, we’re able to recognize the heirlooms that already exist around us. The precious and exquisite gifts of breath, sun, grass, bugs, food, and flowers, are in that moment, bequeathed to us by the very energies of the universe that created us. When we become disciples of nature, the keepers of heirlooms, we see everything Mother Earth has left us as a gift so that we may have full and meaningful lives, connected to what comes before us and what will come after. So that we may pass the heirlooms of a sacred and nurtured Earth on to the loved ones we will one day surround as atoms. Every animal an angel, every angel an heirloom.
